Otherwise known as the Swiss ball or physio ball, they are
designed to challenge your normal ranges of motion and in the process improve
your balance, coordination, and stabilizing strength. Swiss ball training is an
excellent way to build what is known as ‘core body strength’ and also have some
good fun at the same time! Exercises using the balls can range from just simple
movements to more complex exercises, which place the body in a more unstable
balance position. This results in the muscles heightening their readiness and
having to work harder to stabilise the joints and body while you’re on the
unstable surface of the ball. If you include some Swiss ball exercises in your
training programme, over time you will have improved the strength and stability
of your shoulders, hips and core, while also getting those three areas to work
better together. Life is similar to a Swiss ball; uneven, ever changing and
unpredictable! The unstable surface of the ball will help create stability
within the body and mind. So don’t be sceptical and unsure, the ball may seem
awkward at first but with a little practice and motivation you will have
mastered some movements in no time and reap the benefits! Remember exercise can
be tough but it should also be fun!
